Landsholdstræner Kevin Stockford har givet lidt indsigt i U22 damernes tur til EM, der lægges status og gives et bud på hvad der fortsat skal til for at drive niveauet op i dansk kvinde softball.
“The Danish Under-22 Women’s Softball Team recently attended the first U22 European Championships held in Kutno, Poland. This tournament was more than just a competition; it was a significant step in the development of our young athletes, many of whom are poised to become the next generation of leaders in Danish softball.
The team, comprised of mostly youth players and newer talents, demonstrated remarkable skill, determination, and growth throughout the week long competition.
The pathway for player development has been shown here at this tournament. Many of the top nations sending their youth players abroad to play in collage programs in America. It was evident in the number of USA college players, playing at this year’s European championships. A lot of the teams also having American based duel citizen passport holders.
Where to from here?
This was a great step in the right direction for women’s softball in Denmark, it shows us the gap between our U18, U22 and women’s programs is very big and needs to be addressed. We must develop more pitchers and give them the game time needed to learn to be competitive throwers. We have gained a valuable insite as to where we are as a softball nation, and also where we stand in relation to development.
We have been extremely focused this season on nurturing our young athletes through comprehensive training and development opportunities.
The players, though young, exhibited a maturity and understanding of the game that they should be proud of. Over half the team are eligible for the U18 women’s national team for next year’s European championships.
As these athletes continue to develop, the experience gained at the this year’s U22 Championships will be valuable. Competing at such a high level not only enhances their skills but also strengthens their mental resilience, preparing them for future challenges both domestically and internationally.
The Danish Under-22 Women’s Softball Team’s journey at the European Championships is a promising indicator of what’s to come for Danish softball. With continued support and investment in youth development, Denmark is on the right path. These young athletes are not just the future; they are already making their mark today.”
